Tumaini Children's Center brings hope to vulnerable children in Tanzania

05/04/2025

Children who live on the street or are at risk of doing so receive protection, education, and care. Together with SVETAN, we support them on their journey back to a safe environment.

Tumaini Children's Center is a project in the Kagera region in northwestern Tanzania, dedicated to supporting vulnerable children who live or work on the street, or who, due to poverty, family conflicts, or abuse, are at risk of leaving their homes.

The name Tumaini, which means hope, reflects the project's core mission: to prevent children from ending up on the street and to reintegrate those already affected. Since 2003, Tumaini Children's Center has worked alongside the local community, authorities, and families to ensure that children receive the care, protection, and opportunities they need for a bet

ter future.

Impact 2024

Through the generosity of donors and partners, Tumaini Children's Center has achieved significant results over the past year:

  • 40 children were reintegrated into safe family homes, foster homes or boarding schools.
  • 866 vulnerable children received direct support, including counseling, life skills training, and legal assistance.
  • 351 children were helped by locally based Tumaini groups, preventing them from ending up on the streets.
  • 3,971 local leaders participated in training on child protection and their rights, strengthening community support for children at risk.

These efforts contribute to the project's long-term goal of reducing the number of children living and working on the streets while ensuring that all children can grow up in a safe and supportive environment.

Financing and sustainability

Tumaini Children's Center is funded through a combination of income-generating activities, international and local donations, and institutional support. The project actively develops sustainable sources of funding while relying on grants to ensure that more children can be reintegrated into safe environments and provided with education, health care, and social support.
